HISTORY
The Glades Restaurant is a landmark or a destination in Carlinville. The Glades was originally started by a group of businessmen and friends in the late 50’s. I have been told that they felt the new Carlinville Country Club needed a restaurant to go with the new golf and swim club, so they banded together and on Thursday, August 13, 1959, a Grand Opening Celebration took place to launch the new idea. In 1959 the Glades was promoted as a modern restaurant with a cocktail lounge and banquet hall, serving steaks and seafood, and most important at that time, had air conditioning.
The original Articles of Incorporation shows seven owners – Steve A. Marko, Stephen G. Boente, Lawrence M. Boente, Sterling E. Weller, B. Joseph Boente and Paul C. Hembrough. The paperwork was filed and the tradition started! Over the years, a few owners have come and gone and in the mid-1990’s the restaurant was closed down for a couple of years. The Glades was renovated and reopened in August 1998 by two friends, Heidi Heinz and Sherry Brianza, who banded together again and felt Carlinville needed the Glades reopened. Heidi and Sherry were born and raised in Carlinville so when they jumped into renovating the Glades, they had a lot of volunteer help from friends and family who wanted to see the Glades reopened. After opening and while bartending, Heidi created her own special memory at the Glades by meeting her now husband Dan. Heidi moved on and today Sherry Brianza is the sole owner keeping the Glades’ traditions alive and well in Carlinville.
The Glades #1 menu item has an interesting story, too. It is called “Rattlesnake” served with a special dipping sauce, but you will have to come dine with us to know why! The main menu is traditional American – steak, chops, seafood, chicken, pasta, sandwiches, salads and desserts. The bar serves up some of the best libations you will find anywhere. We specialize in real old fashion “ice cream drinks”, manhattans and martinis. Stop in and try a Golden Cadillac or how about a Brass Monkey. All of our desserts and salad dressings are made on site from the best ingredients. Bonnie Stromat was the head cook for many years and we still use a lot of her recipes – Bonnie’s Ice Cream Pie and Bonnie’s Salad is named in her honor and memory. A good cook is an essential ingredient for a restaurant of this caliber and today, Nick Schott, a native of Carlinville, carries on her skills. We are very proud of our food quality and staff.
Ask anyone in Carlinville and you will hear - the Glades Restaurant is a Carlinville tradition. The Glades is steeped with memories for so many people, not only from Carlinville, but also all over central Illinois. The restaurant boasts loyal customers that come from as far as Springfield and St. Louis to dine. It’s not just the great food and pleasant surroundings; it’s the friendly staff, too. They try and make you feel this is “your” restaurant, so come in and make yourself at home. It is the place to go for everyday dining in the casual glassed in 19th Hole that looks out over the Carlinville Country Club golf course, or white linen dining in the more formal dining room. It is a place where everyone gets to know your name to a place to share the unique and special moments of your life. Couples come here for first dates, prom dates, and birthdays and to pop the question of a lifetime – “Will you marry me?” In the banquet room, we conduct business meetings to weddings. A lifetime of memories can be celebrated at the Glades. Come and join us and we look forward to making some special memories for you and your friends and family!
